The Wetland Centre

A day out in St. Ouen is not complete without a visit to the Wetland Centre.

The sights, sounds and interactive equipment provide plenty of entertainment for young and old alike. Video screens, an interactive camera, binoculars and interpretation panels ensure a quality educational experience for all.

With panoramic views of the reed bed through windows of varying heights, visitors can enjoy incredible views of the reserve and its wildlife. Rare and beautiful birds such as Bitterns, Bearded Tits, Lapwings and the magnificent Marsh Harrier all call the area home.

The Wetland Centre was built overlooking St. Ouen’s Pond beside a World War Two German bunker which has been converted into a classroom.

The centre took around a year to build, involving the planting of over 300 Marram grass plugs and the movement of hundreds of tonnes of sand!

Before the building work could start, all wildlife had to be carefully captured and moved to a similar habitat further down the road. The animals moved included grass snakes, green lizards, voles, shrews and woodmice.
